Our Roots: The Electromechanics Institute

elektromekanik_enst

The academic genetic codes of our laboratory trace back to the Electromechanics Division established during the early years of the Republic. At that time, this structure—where the foundations of modern engineering were laid—also became the first environment in which the discipline of power electronics would later begin to take root.

1944

The Establishment of ITU Faculty of Electrical Engineering

With ITU gaining an autonomous university structure, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was officially established. As the Chair of Electrical Machines strengthened, studies on energy conversion and control accelerated, and the intellectual foundation of today’s laboratory matured during this period.

A School of Thought in Gümüşsuyu: Establishment of the Laboratory

During the years when power electronics technology was rising globally, our laboratory began operating within the Electrical Machines Laboratory at the Gümüşsuyu Building. As the site of the first academic studies and experimental applications in this field in Türkiye, our laboratory evolved beyond being a “sub-unit” and became a school where engineers who would shape the industry were trained.

Ayazağa Campus and an Independent Identity

Our laboratory entered a new era with the relocation of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering to its modern building at the Ayazağa Campus. Designed under the leadership of Lect. Dr. Azmi Demirel, our laboratory gained its own independent physical space. This transformation increased research capacity and strengthened industry collaborations.

Today, our laboratory continues its R&D activities in some of the most critical areas of our time, including microgrids, renewable energy integration, electric vehicle technologies, and rare-earth-free generator designs. Drawing strength from our deep-rooted history, we continue contributing to Türkiye’s energy independence.
